The 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) was held from November 11 to 22, 2024, in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Ahead of the conference, the International Council of Tanners, in collaboration with leather industry associations from over 20 countries and regions, issued a joint Leather Manifesto, which the China Leather Industry Association actively endorsed. The manifesto aims to remind delegates of the durability of leather products and their positive role in mitigating the environmental impact of consumption and the fashion industry.

Three years ago, the first Leather Manifesto was introduced during the preparations for the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference. The latest version of the manifesto builds on its predecessor by emphasizing that leather “can be part of the solution to climate change.” It calls for comprehensive and informed measures to evaluate the environmental impacts of materials. The manifesto highlights the durability of leather, which enables leather products to reduce the climate impact of the fashion industry and other sectors.

Furthermore, the manifesto urges regulators to recognize the challenges faced by the leather industry and acknowledges the sector’s ongoing commitment to achieving higher sustainability and circularity standards. Regulators and brands are encouraged to fully and comprehensively consider the benefits of natural materials like leather.

In addition, the manifesto advocates for reuse and the concept of “slow fashion,” asserting that leather is an “ideal choice for a sustainable future.” It emphasizes the need for a holistic approach when measuring environmental impacts, including life cycle analysis, taking into account all aspects of material production.

Finally, the manifesto calls on conference delegates to support the promotion of durable products—those designed for repeated use, repair, and refurbishment.
